Arctic Rights Being Pursued By Canada?
I have to admit, I'm pretty happy that Canada is telling Russia to kindly go fuck themselves when it comes to claiming rights on the Arctic and all the resources it contains. Of course, I'd like to see either one of two things happen. Canada is now trying to lay claim to the Arctic.
Either no one gets access to the minerals and oil, or all nations that are bordering the Arctic evenly split the proceeds from extraction of said resources. Personally, I'd prefer the latter of the two. That would mean more oil and natural resources for the US, and depending on how much is actually there, may even take us off of foreign oil sources.
I'd prefer also that we drill up in Alaska because if everyone's screaming about getting off of foreign oil (Democrats and Republicans alike), then you have no room to complain when we explore for other natural resources within the United States.
To offer a compromise to environmentalists, triple the amount of fines and damages that occur when an oil company screws up. So, if there's a million dollar fine for safety hazards, if you're in Alaska and drilling, those same screw ups cost you $3 million. It keeps them on their toes for safety and environmental concerns, and if they do it right, it doesn't cost anyone any extra.
