Cabbies Don't Want Their Jobs
I can't even believe I'm posting about this, but it's such bullshit, I just had to. New York cab drivers are threatening to strike if GPS units are placed in their cabs.
The Taxi Workers Alliance -- an advocacy group rather than a labor union -- said GPS devices would be an invasion of drivers' privacy because they could track cabs' movements.
It's their job to drive people around. So, they are in public, so they have no reasonable expectation of privacy. Secondly, they are on the job. The job says you are about to get GPS. Don't like it? Get another job.
We've become too spoiled when it comes to employment, myself included. When I talk to my Grandfather, he laughs at things like this because he says "they would have been fired immediately", and he's right. People are scared to death of lawsuits and other wastes of time and money, so they pander to even the most minor complaint. Now, I'm not saying that employers should bend over backwards for employees, but this seems like a non starter issue for me.

I suspect that the real reason why the cabbies don't want the GPS units is because they would make it more difficult for cabbies to cheat their passengers by taking roundabout ways to their destination.
You're probably right. Who's to say that it was 20.1 miles vs 20.3 miles? I don't know what NY cabbies charge, but I can imagine that an extra .2 miles per passenger per day can really add up. Besides, if the customer is paying cash, who's to say how much the cabbie is skimming off the top?
