Judge wants everyone in UK on DNA database | Special reports | Guardian Unlimited

Even visitors to the UK.  Yeah.  Good luck with that.  No one is going to agree to that.  The UK is already one of the biggest "nanny states" in the world, why would anyone want to give up their DNA?  Something like that would be ripe for abuse.  It certainly wouldn't fly here in the US.

Hell, there are people getting sued because jails want DNA samples from all inmates even BEFORE they are convicted.  There are even examples of jails being told to get rid of the samples and they aren't doing it.

So don't think for a minute that the British will fall for this.

Here's a scary example of abuse.  Someone works at the DNA lab.  They get mad at their significant other and plans their murder.  What's to prevent them from grabbing a sample and smearing it all over the crime scene, making it look like the person actually did the crime?

Now that's a worst case scenario, but you can imagine other's that are just as scary.  People want to be free from Big Brother, and to ask everyone to give up their DNA samples, even visitors, just simply isn't going to happen.  If they put something like that into place, you can watch their tourism trade drop to next to nothing.  I know I wouldn't visit the UK if they did that, or I'd get right back on the plane and head for home.

Source: GOP leaders want Craig to quit as planned - CNN.com

Ha ha! I was only kidding!  That seems to be what Senator Larry Craig is saying now that he's come out and is trying to withdraw his resignation from the Senate.  He's actually trying to get his guilty plea withdrawn as well.

I've spoken with several people in the criminal justice field and they have all agreed that his chances of getting his guilty plea withdrawn are almost zero.  They have all said that a judge would look at it and say "why should I allow this.  You understood it, you signed it, and you moved on with your life."

Senator Craig is only doing this because he wants to keep his job.  Personally, I think even if he does manage to keep his job by some miracle, the voters of Idaho, a VERY conservative state, would vote him out anyways.

Sorry Larry, but you broke the law, you plead guilty, now you want to avoid the heat from committing that crime.  It's simply not going to happen.

Documents: Troops disregard rules of war - CNN.com

This has got to be one of the most biased article I've read in the mainstream
media
in a long time.  Take a look at the headline and then the first paragraph:

Newly released documents regarding crimes committed by U.S. troops against civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan detail a pattern of troops failing to understand and follow the rules that govern interrogations and deadly actions.

"a pattern of troops failing to understand and follow the rules.."  That sounds like a lot, if not most troops in my book.  But it's not the case:

The documents, released Tuesday by the American Civil Liberties Union ahead of a lawsuit, total nearly 10,000 pages of courts-martial summaries, transcripts and military investigative reports about 22 incidents. They show repeated examples of troops believing they were within the law when they killed local citizens.

22 incidents.  Out of the 4+ years we've been there, there have been 22 incidents involving almost 160,000 US troops.  That's not even 1/10th of 1% of all troops there, but if you read a headline and first paragraph of an article like that, you'd think that we were slaughtering Iraqi civilians and not following the rules en mass.

If that were true, there wouldn't be an Iraq left.  We'd wipe the floor with these people.  But simply put, we aren't.  Yes, there have been crimes committed by troops, and those troops were court martialed for it.

Nasrina Bargzie, an attorney with the ACLU's National Security Project, said the documents also show that there is information being withheld from public scrutiny.

"The government has gone out of its way to hide the human cost of this war," Bargzie said. Releasing the documents now "paints at least a part of that picture so people at least know what's going on," she said.

How are these being hidden from the public?  If you can get these documents through the FOIA (Freedom of Information Act), then the government isn't hiding anything.  They simply are dealing with other issues that are more important than publicly outing soldiers who've committed crimes more then is already known.

Do you honestly believe that the government would hide something then turn around and hand over documents because of FOIA?

The simple fact is that in all wars, war crimes to occur.  When those facts come to light, those who are responsible are punished for it.  Our military has shown great restraint and concern for civilian life that any other nation on Earth wouldn't.  Yet 22 incidents out of 160,000 troops seems to be a "pattern" to the guy who wrote this article.

'Drug dealer' tarred, feathered | NEWS.com.au

I always thought that this was something that happened in the olden days or on cartoons.  I didn't know it was actually done, let alone something that was done in recent times.

But the UK folks have gotten sick and tired of drug dealers and the lack of support from their police officers, so they tarred and feathered a drug dealer.  Of course, the drug dealer in question hasn't turned up to file a police report (probably because he's embarrassed and he's a drug dealer?  Just a thought), but I simply cannot allow something like this to take place and not show you a picture.  So here it is:

China Searches For Missing Uranium

How the hell do you misplace Uranium?  China really needs to get it's act together if it can't find 17 pounds worth of Uranium.  That's enough to make a very small nuclear weapon.

As just an added "odd item", Isn't 17 pounds worth of Uranium HIGHLY desired by Iran?  Just a thought.

Guards 'should knock before entering' - Telegraph

Every time I see the British start acting like adults, they go and pull crap
like this
.  They are actually telling guards to knock on the cell door before entering into the inmates cell.

At least someone's seeing the insanity of that.

But Glyn Travis, of the Prison Officers' Association, said: "If we have to knock on prisoners' cell doors we may as well give them a key and let them do what they want. There's got to be some modicum of sense."

There was a report with these recommendations:

Two of the main recommendations were that "staff should routinely knock before entering cells, except in emergencies", and that "staff should address prisoners by their preferred names".

Oh well if their pretty little feelings are being hurt, perhaps they shouldn't come back to jail?  Perhaps they shouldn't commit crimes against other people.

A third of inmates were reported as claiming they did not feel they were treated with respect.

YOU'RE IN PRISON.  You're lucky you have rights at all.  "Respect" doesn't come to criminals.  It comes to men acting like men and women acting like women.  If you can't follow the rules and try to victimize people, then you don't deserve respect.  So man up and stop acting like a crybaby because you're sissy feelings are hurt because prison guards aren't treating you exactly how you want.

S.C. Prisons Director Defends Pink Plan | World Latest | Guardian Unlimited

Oh how I enjoy it when Sheriffs take it upon themselves to make sure that
criminals don't want to go back to jail
.  State Corrections Department John Ozmint puts inmates who do sexual acts in front of guards into pink prison jumpsuit's instead of the usual tan ones.

It reminds me of Sheriff Joe Arpaio who does something similar, but to ALL inmates.  Sheriff Arpaio is mentioned in the article, but the depth at which Mr. Arpaio took it isn't mentioned.  So I will show you what he's done here.

Pink jumpsuit's, pink cells, banning smoking, coffee, porn, weight lifting, chain gangs, charging inmates for their daily meals, the list goes on and on about what Sheriff Arpaio has done.  He's made it so that people don't WANT to come back to jail, which is fairly common with some inmates.  They complain about the food, lack of luxuries, and they get the same response:  "jail isn't supposed to be fun.  If you don't like it, don't come back"

I just wish that more police departments did this as it would probably make criminals either quit doing crime, or be a lot more careful about being caught.  Since most criminals are idiots, you can bet that most would stop.  I am curious about how crime has gone up or down within his jurisdiction during that time, but I am unable to find anything on it.  If you do happen to find something like it, send it my way and I'll forward it on.
